Who is gogreen.coop?

In June 2008, the employees of South Central Indiana REMC, a rural electric cooperative located in Martinsville, IN, formed a Go-Green Committee. The committee is made up of 10 employees of the REMC and SCI Services LLC, Inc. The goal of the committee is to find ways to be more environmentally responsible both as a company and a community. The cost of development and maintenance of this website is paid by the South Central Indiana REMC to show its support for the go-green efforts of its employees and the Go-Green Committee.

What is the mission/purpose of the SCI REMC Go-Green Committee?

The goal of the committee is to find ways to be more environmentally responsible both as a company and a community and to share those ideas with as many people as possible. By doing this, we achieve our primary goal of protecting our environment for generations to come.

There is an ancient Indian Proverb that truly summarizes our mission to go-green:

Treat the earth well.
It was not given to you by your parents,
it was loaned to you by your children.

Why develop the gogreen.coop website?

The South Central Indiana REMC Go-Green Committee decided early on that they wanted to develop a go-green website to help share some of the tips and ideas they had learned about reducing, reusing, and recycling. We want to share our knowledge with others so we can all work together to improve the environment and protect our natural resources.

What are the employees of South Central Indiana REMC doing to go-green?

SCI REMC was taking green initiatives even before the committee was established by recycling items like scrap metal, used motor oil, old tires, pallets, and batteries. The first project of the Go-Green Committee was to start new recycling initiatives for SCI REMC employees. Our company and our employees now recycle:

  • Cardboard
  • Newspapers
  • Mixed Paper
  • Plastic Bottles
  • Aluminum Cans

We have declared every Friday to be Recycling Day and encourage employees to bring recyclables from home.

We encourage the community to help with our Cell Phone and Compact Fluorescent Bulb (CFL) recycling campaigns.  Anyone can drop off used cell phones (no accessories please) and used CFL bulbs at our office at 300 Morton Avenue, Martinsville, IN.

Any proceeds from the new recycling initiatives will be donated to a local charitable organization selected by the SCI REMC employees and the Go-Green Committee.

  • Every Sunday, 500,000 trees are used to produce the 88% of newspapers that are never recycled.
  • The US throws away enough iron and steel to continuously supply all of the nation’s automakers.
  • Aluminum takes 200-500 years to fully decompose in a landfill.
  • There is no limit to the number of times aluminum cans can be recycled.
